About Dr Sam Akbar

There are many reasons you might be seeking the help of a therapist. Perhaps you’re struggling with the end of a relationship or problems at work. Maybe your anxieties have started to shut down options in your life. Maybe you just feel stuck, but are not sure why. If you feel any of these things, you certainly wouldn’t be alone. All of us struggle at one time or another, but sometimes you might need some more help to manage.

Choosing to address your difficulties by working with a psychologist can make the difference between the life you have and the life you want.

About Me
I am a chartered clinical psychologist based in Kensington offering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). I believe strongly that psychological interventions can make a significant and meaningful difference to the quality of people’s lives whether they are struggling with mental health difficulties or have just become stuck and want to find new ways to move forward in their personal lives, relationships or work.

My approach
I work in a non-judgemental, collaborative and compassionate way to help you reduce distress and strengthen your psychological flexibility and resilience so you can deal more effectively with life’s ups and downs both now and in the future. Each intervention is tailored specifically to you in order to bring about understanding and change as quickly as possible. My approach is to work in a clear, transparent and time-limited way.

Choosing to work with a psychologist can be a daunting decision which raises a number of questions. Who do I go to? How long will I have to come for? Will it help? Why can’t I manage on my own? By meeting for an initial consultation, you can decide whether you feel therapy is for you and discuss any concerns you have. Finding the right therapist is an important step and I hope that the information you find here will help you decide if you would like to meet with me for an initial session.I am always happy to have a 10-15 minute consultation on the phone so you can see if you would like to meet for a session.

When and where?
Daytime and evening appointments available in Kensington. I usually see clients on a Monday evening.

My training, work experience and any achievement

Experience
In addition to private practice, I also work in the NHS providing psychological interventions to adults with longstanding mental health difficulties and to those who have complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Prior to becoming a clinical psychologist I worked in television production for several years so I have a first-hand understanding of working in a high stress industry and the effect that can have on psychological well-being.

Qualifications
Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, University College London
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology, London Metropolitan University (First Class)
BA Hons in Classics, Wadham College, Oxford (2:1)

Professional Registration
I am registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council and hold Chartered Status with the British Psychological Society.
I also hold full accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP)
